ATF stands for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, which is a federal law enforcement agency within the United States Department of Justice. The ATF is responsible for enforcing federal criminal laws related to the manufacture, importation, and distribution of firearms, explosives, and alcohol and tobacco products, as well as regulating the firearms industry and providing support to other law enforcement agencies. The ATF has many specialized units, including the National Response Team which investigates arson and explosives cases, and the Firearms Tracing Unit which traces the origin of firearms used in crimes.
